San Francisco Conviction Review Unit

San Francisco Conviction Review Unit

Description

The San Francisco Review Unit is a subdivision of the San Francisco District Attorney's Office. The purpose of the office is to investigate all claims of innocence that are accompanied by valid evidence to conclude that an individual has been wrongfully convicted. Most cases are related to convictions of homicide, sex crimes or other violent crime. However, the office may also consider claims of innocence related to prosecutorial misconduct or cases that conclude in significant collateral consequence. Individuals must provide substantial scientific proof to back claims of innocence. The evidence must be new to the case, or subject to testing with technology that was unavailable at the time of conviction. The office also considers potential issues related to excessive sentencing. Whenever necessary, staff make recommendations that a sentence or conviction be reconsidered by the District Attorney based on available evidence. For more information about the work of the San Francisco Conviction Review Unit, contact the office directly or through an attorney.
